This single-family house project on the outskirts of Kharkiv has a complex history. It started as a plan for a new home and evolved into a necessity for wartime shelter. The original 6x6 meter building on the site allowed for a step-by-step reconstruction, beginning with essential functions: a kitchen, bathroom, and small bedroom. In contrast, the new extension and reconstructed roof were designed for comfort and daily enjoyment. The extension mirrors the footprint of the existing building, featuring a double-height, light-filled living room. The absence of a second level made the structure lightweight and easy to erect. This space connects openly with the second level of the old structure, which houses the master bedroom, a large bathroom, and a wardrobe. During the energy crisis caused by the war, the functional core can operate independently from the new volume, using stove heating in the kitchen. In peaceful times, the enfilade connection between the compact rooms of the old structure and the expansive, day-lit living room creates a striking spatial contrast, uniting the old and the new into a home that serves as both a shelter and a comfortable dwelling.
