The central location of the printery building in the Old Town offers significant potential for activating public spaces by redefining its role in the urban environment. A key component of the master plan involves redesigning Magdeburg Law Square into a single pedestrian zone that seamlessly connects the square with the building via the existing passageway. Additionally, the inner courtyard will be opened up and feature an amphitheater. Various ramps and stairs along the facade of the former printing house will harmoniously integrate pedestrian areas with the building's internal levels, creating opportunities for outdoor terraces, cafes, and galleries. This blend of external and internal public spaces facilitates new connections between the street and the inner courtyard through the building's ground floor. The architectural concept is deeply rooted in a respect for the historical heritage of both the printery and the surrounding Old Town. We embrace all historical layers, highlighting the building's characteristic features while uncovering its potential. Preserving authentic elements and emphasizing the original brickwork of the facade fosters a dialogue between old and new, with added elements that stand out rather than mimic the historical ones. The facades facing the street and square are restrained and minimalist, while the inner courtyard features bright and playful designs. New elements reflect modern programs and zoning. The project's focal point is the atrium cut out of the existing slabs, which creates visual connections between different floors and offers a new spatial experience for visitors and employees. The atrium serves as a hub for interaction among entrepreneurs, exhibition guests, visitors of the coffee shop and co-working space users, fostering new initiatives and community engagement. The roof reconstruction not only completes the building's architectural image but also significantly enhances its energy efficiency.
